Early Television: The Dawn of a New Era

Where to even begin with television? Without sounding like a wikipedia page, the concept of television has been around since the 1800s. However, any version with even a minute resemblance to television now, only came to be in the 1920s. Television broadcasts became commonplace post World War II. For the sake of this editorial, we shall be discussing television from 1950 onward.  After being on radio since 1932, Jack Benny went on to do television for 15 years, with a five year overlap between the TV and radio shows. Well! Television was a completely new media. Interesting to the consumer, but rather daunting for show business. They were now being asked to combine the production scale, time and effort required for film-making, with the regularity and recurring cast members of radio. For some, this was not an issue. Jack Benny, for instance, made his journey into television as early as 1950. Quiz shows also came out of the woodwork at alarming speeds.  Bud Collyer's Beat the Clo...

To think kids would come home, and beg their parents to be able to catch their favorite program before homework. It's late at night. You can't sleep and your eyes hurt. Anemoia: Nostalgia for a time one has never known. Welcome to Back There! Back There is a phrase I coined myself to describe all things vintage entertainment. From TV to movies to radio, it's all things old school cool. My inspiration for this came mainly through Pinterest. I've collected  over 1200 (and counting) photos of actors, TV shows, TV guide covers, etc from the 40s through to the 70s. It's become a favorite hobby of mine and I'd like more than anything to share it with like-minded people. Perhaps I never grew up with a set like this, but TV did kickstart my interest in all things vintage. As a young person myself, it's easy to forego the past and look   squarely to the future, but I find that quick, short trips back there,   sitting up in my room with the lights off watching a good film noir has brought me a certain kind of nostalgia that I just can't quite explain. That's why I put the definition of Anemoia on top, as that's where "back...
